2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant Won By GMU Honors Student - Governor of Maryland Praises Event Organizers

Rockville, MD (September23, 2010) - On Friday, September 16, 2010, the public was treated to anevening of fun and excitement during the Second Washington MetropolitanMiss Chinese American Beauty Pageant. The event, which was held at the Strathmore Music Centerin Bethesda, MD, saw family, friends and supporters cheerenthusiastically as the 15 pageant contestants performed flawlessly forthe audience. When it was over, Miss Patty Yao, a 23-year-old honorsstudent at George Mason University, emergedas the pageant winner and only the second person to hold the covetedtitle of Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty PageantQueen. Patty Yao, who moved to the U.S. from Taipei, Taiwan in2005, dazzled the audience with a spectacular ribbon dance that won her"Miss Best Talent" an eloquent evening gown and a dazzling two-piecebathing suit that won her "Miss Best Posture."

Serena Lin, a 23-year-old graduate student attending American University, was selected as the 1st Runner-Up. Kathy Shi, a 17-year-old high school honors student attending the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA, was selected as the 2nd Runner-Up. Channel 23 in Hong Kong will air the pageant in the near future. Pacific Culture International (PCI), a nonprofit organization located in Rockville, MD, organized the event.


Patty Yao, the 2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant winner, is a 23-year-old honors student at George Mason University who is majoring in Accounting and Information Systems Technology. Miss Yao was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to Fairfax, VA, with her family, in 2005.

As the DC Miss China pageant winner and role model, Patty plans toto reach out to people as a friendship ambassador and work to improverelations between the United States and China by presenting herself asa Chinese American. Miss Yao will also work to introduce the Chin
ese culture to Americans in hopes of bringing both cultures together.

Patty also won the "MissBest Talent" and "Miss Best Posture" (Evening Gown and Swimsuit)categories. She will receive the following scholarships and prizes:

•  All expense paid two-week trip to China,where she will serve as international

   friendship ambassadors and promotecultural exchange between the U.S. and

   China
•  $8,500 scholarship to attend the ImageMakers, Inc.® International Image     

Certification and Excellence Training program in Nashville, TN
•  $1,800 Chouette watch from Pacific Luxury Limited
•  $5000 from Pacific Culture International
•  $350 gift card from Touch of Beauty, Inc.

Serena Lin,the 2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant1st Runner-Up, is a 23-year-old graduate student at American Universityand is pursuing a master's degree in Public Communications. Miss Linwas born and raised in Fujian, China and moved to the United States in2009. In her free time, she helps local charities promote their eventby donating her time and talents as a model.

After graduate school,Serena plans to create her own media company, which she will use topromote the Chinese American culture - giving it a larger presence inmainstream American society. Serena will receive the followingscholarships and prizes:


•  All expense paid two-week trip to China, where she will serve as international

   friendship ambassadors and promote cultural exchange between the U.S. and China
•  $8,500 scholarship to attend the ImageMakers, Inc.® International Image Certification and Excellence Training

   program in Nashville, TN
•  $1,800 Chouette watch from Pacific Luxury Limited
•  $3000 from Pacific Culture International
•  $350 gift card from Touch of Beauty, Inc.

Kathy Shi,the 2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant2nd Runner-Up, is a 17-year-old high school student from Chantilly, VAwho attends the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technologyin Alexandria, VA. Miss Shi is a talented, outgoing young woman who isa member of her school's varsity cheerleading leading squad.

Kathy sees herself as arole model for young Chinese American women who want to excelacademically and socially. She hopes to use her new standing to inspireother Chinese American girls to pursue their dreams. Kathy will receivethe following scholarships and prizes:

Melody Cheng, the 2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant 3rd Runner-Up,is a 24-year-old graduate from the University of California who is amember of the Development team at the American Council forInternational Education.

Melody also won the "Miss Best Dressed" (Evening Gown) competition. She will receive $500 prize from Pacific Culture International and a $350 gift card from Touch of Beauty, Inc.

  

Valentina Wang,the 2010 Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageant4th Runner-Up, is a 19-year-old student majoring in Economics at TowsonUniversity in Maryland. Valentina is a gifted musician who enjoysplaying the piano and guitar.

Valentina also won the "Miss Most Popular" competition. She will receive a $500 prize from Pacific Culture International and a $350 gift card from Touch of Beauty, Inc.

Pacific Culture International Receives Governor of Maryland Citation For Outstanding Service To The Chinese American Community

Congratulations to Chris Jan, executive director of Pacific Culture International (PCI), organizer and host of the Washington Metropolitan Miss Chinese American Beauty Pageants, for receiving the Governor's Citation for outstanding service to the State of Maryland and the Chinese American community.

Edward Chow, Jr.,secretary of Veterans Affairs for the State of Maryland presented theaward to Ms. Jan at the Second Washington Metropolitan Miss ChineseAmerican Beauty Pageant. The citation honors PCI, for their leadershipand contributions in organizing the Second Washington Metropolitan MissChinese American Beauty Pageant, providing opportunities to youngChinese American women and helping these young women develop theirleadership abilities, express their cultural pride and use theirpotential to the fullest extent. Governor Martin O'Malley, Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown and Secretary of State John P. McDonough signed the award.
